Science Fair Rules

Please minimize the amount of help you give your child.  The amount of support each student needs will vary by age, but please do your best to stand back and let them take charge. Participating in a science fair teaches many valuable skills - how to channel their imagination, critical thinking, organization, research, and presentation skills. All of these help build confidence.  Judges will be trained to look for student knowledge of the subject and familiarity with the project -- they are not looking for a perfect poster.

Please have a look at how your project will be judged at the TSES and PC School District fairs.

PCSD Elementary Science Fair Rules

1. Students may enter a project individually or as a group of 2 - 3 students. ALL STUDENTS must contribute to the project and participate equally in the presentation. Judges will evaluate the project with this in mind. There is no registration fee for any PCSD Science Fairs.

2. No open flames, dangerous or illegal chemicals or explosives.

3. No growing bacteria, mold or fungus of any kind.

4. No bodily fluids of any kind (ex:  blood, spit, sweat, etc.).

5. Experiments that harm animals are not permitted.

6. If human subjects are used, even if only through surveys or questionnaires, the student(s) must complete a special form and get permission from their teacher before proceeding.

SLVSEF Form 2019_USEF_English.pdf (required for 5th graders)

7. Exhibits/posters must be self-standing and no larger than 36" wide (when set up, 48" extended) x 36" high x 24" deep. Tri-fold poster boards can be purchased from local Michael's and Staples stores.

8. Students are responsible for supplying all items needed for their display, including extension cords. The school supplies tables only. Students must indicate any special needs they have on their registration (electrical outlet, extra space, etc.) and we will do our best to accommodate them.

9. Fifth grade students who qualify to go on to the PCSD 5th Grade Showcase must complete the separate registration forms for the USEF.  Students must have this completed form IN HAND AT THE PCSD 5th Grade Showcase or they will not be allowed to compete. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS!  2019_USEF_English.pdf

10. PCSD is following the rules and regulations of the University of Utah Science and Engineering Fair (USEF). Selected/winning students (5th graders and higher) from Park City’s school fairs will have the opportunity to participate in the regional fair, held in March in Salt Lake City. More information about SLVSEF is available at

The Trailside Elementary School Science Fair is an exciting and fun way for students to develop a love for science, engineering, and technology!

Held each year in conjunction with the PACE program and the PTO, the science fair is a volunteer-run event.
